With these sobering statistics in mind, Japan Airlines (JAL) has begun a trial of a clothing-sharing service to encourage passengers to fly without luggage to reduce carbon emissions.
JAL and Sumitomo Corporation have launched a trial of the "Any Wear, Anywhere" clothing-sharing service for foreign tourists and business travelers to Japan who use JAL-operated flights.
The trial period is from July 5, 2023, to August 31, 2024 (scheduled)

You must book your vacation clothing at least a month in advance and supply airline and lodging information. The airline hopes to contribute to sustainable tourism by providing a travel experience with less luggage.

"By expanding the service, we aim to create an environment where travelers can use local options for all aspects of their clothing, food, and accommodation, transforming travel and business trips into more sustainable experiences. In providing the Service, Sumitomo Corporation will be responsible for developing the reservation system and for the procurement, laundering, and delivery of clothes," it said in its statement.

All clothing items offered for rent will be sourced from excess apparel and pre-owned clothing, encouraging the circular economy concept. JAL will track changes in checked-in luggage weight and the effect of lower airplane weight on carbon dioxide emissions due to using the service.
How To Use The Service
Visit the "Any Wear, Anywhere" reservation website. Go to the Reservation page and select the clothing set that best suits the season and purpose of your visit to Japan. Enter your JAL flight booking number, the date of pickup and return of the clothing set, and information about the destination where you wish to pick up the clothing set and make a payment. (Reservations must be made at least one month in advance. In principle, the return date must be within two weeks of the pickup date). Pick up and return the reserved clothing set at your hotel.
