Known for its relaxed culture, delicious cuisine, and stunning architecture, Italy has long been on everyone's travel wish list. But now, those who want to stay longer can do so, thanks to Italy's new digital nomad visa which came into effect this month, as reported by Euronews.
On March 28th, 2022, Italy signed a new visa for remote workers into law, which became effective on April 4th. This visa is different from other digital nomad visas in that it is managed under Article 27 of the immigration code and is aimed at highly skilled workers. According to Euronews, this means that it requires a certain level of qualifications and expertise.
The Italian government's decree defines a digital nomad as a citizen of a non-EU state who carries out a highly qualified work activity using technological tools that allow them to work remotely. They can be self-employed or work as an employee or collaborator for a company, even if they are not residents of Italy.
At first, there was confusion about who would be considered a 'highly skilled worker'. However, there is now more clarity on the matter. Starting from March 2024, the digital nomad visa will be available to workers who earn at least three times the minimum income required to be exempted from healthcare costs in Italy. This means that the worker must earn just under €28,000 per year.
