Italy Celebrates 60 Years In Space With Conference In New Delhi

On December 16, 2024, the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi hosted a landmark event celebrating the 60th anniversary of Italy’s historic launch of San Marco 1, its first satellite. This pivotal moment in space exploration, which occurred on December 16, 1964, made Italy the third country in the world to launch a satellite into orbit. The event was organised as part of the Italian National Space Day under the theme "Living in Space: Exploring Innovative Solutions to Tackle New Challenges."

The conference brought together over 100 attendees, including students, university professors, and key figures from the Indian aerospace community and industry, showcasing the deep and growing collaboration between Italy and India in space exploration.

Event Highlights

The conference began with an introduction by Professor Sergio Ledda, the scientific attaché at the Italian Embassy, setting the tone for a series of expert-led seminars and discussions. Lecturers from the University of Sassari in Sardinia, including notable speakers like Professor Antonella Pantaleo and Professor Plinio Innocenzi, addressed critical topics in space science.

Infectious Contamination And Self-Sterilising Materials: Professor Innocenzi highlighted solutions to combat microbial contamination in confined environments like the International Space Station, presenting advances in self-sterilising materials.

Human Body In Space: Dr. Andrada Pica delved into the physiological effects of low-gravity environments on astronauts.

Microalgae For Food And CO2 Reduction: Professor Pantaleo, Dr. Alessia Manca, and Mr. Shashi Kumar from the ICGEB in Trieste explored microalgae cultivation in microgravity to produce food and reduce carbon dioxide levels.

A Unique Culinary Experience

One of the conference’s most talked-about segments was a space food-tasting session led by Chef Stefano Polato in collaboration with EAT Freedom, a start-up founded by Sara Rocci Denis. The live cooking show featured innovative recipes for astronauts, including an Indian millet-based couscous, emphasising balanced nutrition and taste in space-friendly meals.
