India's First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge To Open In Rameswaram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India's first-ever vertical lift railway sea bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, today, on April 6, 2025. The new Pamban Bridge, built at a cost of INR 550 crore, is set to revolutionise rail connectivity in the region while allowing seamless passage for ships. This landmark project will be unveiled on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, adding to its cultural and historical significance.

A Modern Engineering Marvel

The 2.08-kilometre-long bridge boasts 99 spans and a 72.5-metre vertical lift span that can rise up to 17 metres, facilitating the passage of large vessels without disrupting rail traffic. This remarkable design allows for a seamless blend of train operations and maritime traffic, enhancing both transportation and trade routes.

Constructed using high-grade stainless steel and advanced materials, the new bridge offers enhanced durability and corrosion resistance, which are crucial for withstanding the harsh marine environment. The bridge also features a dual rail track design, ensuring it meets future demands for increased traffic. Its construction, which began in 2019, overcame significant logistical and environmental challenges, including the region's turbulent waters and seismic activity.

Rameswaram, a town steeped in religious significance, is a key destination for pilgrims, particularly those visiting the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple. Other Project Launches

On April 6, PM Modi will also flag off a new train service connecting Rameswaram to Tambaram (Chennai) and dedicate several other vital infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu. The projects, valued at over INR 8,300 crore, include the foundation stone for the four-laning of key National Highway (NH) sections such as Walajapet-Ranipet, Viluppuram-Puducherry, Poondiyankuppam-Sattanathapuram, and Cholapuram-Thanjavur. These upgrades will not only reduce travel time but also enhance access to important medical facilities, ports, and agricultural markets, driving economic growth in the region.
