Indian Railways is set to roll out stricter baggage regulations for passengers, aligning more closely with the standards commonly observed in air travel. Under the proposed changes, luggage will be subject to weight checks using electronic weighing machines at major railway stations. Passengers exceeding the permissible limits or carrying oversized items—regardless of weight—may face additional charges or penalties. Authorities say that yhe initiative is aimed at improving efficiency and enhancing passenger comfort, particularly on long-distance journeys.

How It Will Work

Baggage allowances on trains will vary depending on the class of travel: AC First Class passengers will be allowed up to 70 kg, AC Two Tier up to 50 kg, AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class up to 40 kg, and General Class passengers will be limited to 35 kg. In addition to weight restrictions, bulky items that obstruct space within train compartments may incur penalties even if they fall within the weight limit.

Travellers exceeding the permitted allowance may face additional fees or penalties

Under proposed rules from Indian Railways, passengers will need to have their luggage weighed using electronic machines before being allowed onto the platform. This move brings rail travel a step closer to the protocols seen at airports. Strict weight limits will be enforced, and travellers exceeding the permitted allowance—or carrying luggage that's overly bulky, even if underweight—may face additional fees or penalties.

The Initial Rollout

According to reports, the initial rollout will cover key stations within the North Central Railway (NCR) zone, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah. At these stations, passengers will only be granted platform access once their bags have been cleared as compliant with the new weight regulations. So, if you’re travelling by train in this region, plan accordingly—pack light and arrive early to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Indian Railways To Introduce Premium Retail Stores

Moreover, Indian Railways is planning to open premium single-brand retail stores at some stations across the country. These outlets will offer a range of products including clothing, footwear, electronics, and travel accessories.

According to officials, the move is part of a wider effort to upgrade the passenger experience and give railway stations an airport-like feel. Alongside making travel more comfortable, the initiative is also expected to boost revenue for the railways and offer travellers more options while they wait for their trains.
