If you're dreaming of witnessing Uttarakhand’s winter splendours this year and are wondering where to stay, there's a unique new option worth considering. Travellers venturing to the breathtaking Garbyang region in the Kumaon sector now have access to a distinctive tent-based homestay, recently inaugurated by the Indian Army. Set amidst a landscape steeped in history and natural beauty, this initiative aims to elevate the visitor experience while fostering regional growth and sustainable tourism.

Under Operation Sadbhavna

The tent-based homestay in Garbyang, Uttarakhand, was formally inaugurated on October 6th, 2025 as part of Operation Sadbhavna, the Indian Army’s enduring initiative to foster goodwill, infrastructure, and social development in remote and border areas. Recognising the potential of the homestay to boost local employment and stimulate the village economy, the community expressed support for the project.

Sustainable Development Through Community Ownership

While the homestay was developed by the Indian Army, its management and day-to-day operations will be handed over entirely to the local community. This approach is designed to ensure that the benefits of tourism are both inclusive and sustainable. By empowering villagers to run the facility independently, the initiative encourages community-led development, builds a sense of ownership, and enables residents to generate a stable source of income—all while promoting responsible tourism in the region.

How To Book A Stay

Bookings for the tent-based homestay in Garbyang are managed directly by the Garbyang Village Committee, ensuring a community-run and locally beneficial tourism experience. Travellers can make reservations by contacting the committee at 9410734276, 7579811930, or 9596752645. The cost of a stay is INR 1,000 per person per night, inclusive of all meals, offering visitors an affordable and immersive way to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of this remote Himalayan village.
