Residents of Delhi may soon find themselves soaring above the city, as hot air balloon rides are set to be introduced at select sites. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has confirmed the appointment of an agency to oversee the adventure activity, which will initially be launched at four designated locations. “After careful consideration, the four locations have been selected for the initial start of the project,” an official told news agency PTI.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to launch hot air balloon rides at four scenic locations across the city: Yamuna Sports Complex, Commonwealth Games Sports Complex, Asita, and Baansera Park. These sites have been chosen for their open spaces, and accessibility.
A private agency has been appointed to operate the upcoming hot air balloon rides under a revenue-sharing model, with all ticket proceeds routed directly to the DDA to ensure transparency and accurate record-keeping.
Each of the four designated sites in Delhi—Asita (a green zone along the Yamuna), Baansera Bamboo Park at the Yamuna riverfront, Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar, and the Commonwealth Games Sports Complex—will allocate 3,600 square metres (60x60 metres) for balloon operations. The service is expected to begin within two months. Initially awarded for a period of three years, the contract may be extended for up to nine years.
Hot air balloon rides are typically associated with scenic landscapes and tourist destinations rather than bustling urban centres. While a few cities do offer balloon experiences, these are often limited to particular areas with striking natural or historical features and are usually tied to special events or seasonal attractions. The main appeal lies in the panoramic views from above, allowing passengers to take in expansive natural vistas, architectural landmarks, or dramatic geography.
In Delhi, authorities say that this initiative is part of DDA’s wider effort to revitalise the Yamuna riverfront. In parallel, a ferry service is being developed along a 4–6 km stretch of the Yamuna, between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. A memorandum of understanding has already been signed between the Inland Waterways Authority of India and key departments of the Delhi government to move the project forward. Designed to boost tourism and improve connectivity along the riverfront, the initiative is part of a broader effort to revitalise Delhi’s waterways.
