Heading To Punjab On A Trip? Get Ready For A 'Turban Museum'

In an announcement during the presentation of Punjab's 2024-25 Budget, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema revealed plans for the establishment of a Turban Museum in the city of Sri Anandpur Sahib, around 90 kilometres from Chandigarh. The museum aims to spotlight the cultural significance of turbans in Indian heritage.

Cheema, emphasising a total budgetary outlay exceeding INR 2 lakh crore with a special emphasis on health and education, shared his vision for the Turban Museum during the assembly session. "Efforts are underway to build a Turban Museum at Sri Anandpur Sahib, showcasing the importance of turbans in Indian culture," he said.

Focusing on the tourism sector, Cheema highlighted the recent Punjab Tourism Summit and Travel Mart 2023 held in Mohali to unveil the state's untapped tourism potential. Additionally, various cultural fairs across districts showcased Punjab's vibrant traditions.

In addition, the minister allocated funds for multiple development projects, including the Parshad scheme in Sri Chamkaur Sahib and the ongoing Anglo-Sikh War Circuit. Recognising the need to promote Punjab as a tourist hub, Cheema proposed a substantial outlay of INR 166 crore, with specific allocations for memorial construction, upkeep, and tourism branding.

A significant push for ecotourism was outlined with the "Ecotourism Activities in Various Wildlife Areas/Birs of Punjab" project, budgeted at INR 25 crore over the next three years. Efforts are also underway to transform Ranjit Sagar Dam in Pathankot into a premier tourist destination.

In addressing infrastructure concerns, Cheema expressed surprise at the lack of proper connectivity in many villages around Sri Anandpur Sahib despite their historical and spiritual importance in Sikhism. To address this issue, an initial allocation of INR 30 crore has been set aside for the construction of bridges, enhancing travel ease for residents between Khera Kalmot and Bhalladi and between Bela Dhyani and Ajauli.
