Delhi Airport To Cancel Over 100 Flights Daily Ahead Of Runway Upgrade

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will temporarily shut down one of its three runways, 10/28, from June 15 to September 15, 2025 for infrastructure upgrades. The planned maintenance is set to impact more than 100 flights per day, as airport authorities move to improve low-visibility landing capabilities ahead of the winter season.

Daily Flight Cancellations Planned at Delhi Airport

According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a total of 114 flights will be cancelled daily, with an additional 86 to be rescheduled to non-peak hours. The temporary closure is aimed at upgrading the runway’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) to CAT III-B standards. This will allow aircraft to land with visibility as low as 50 m, a critical requirement during the dense fog that typically affects flight operations in Delhi between November and January.

The upgrade had originally been scheduled earlier but was deferred due to concerns over air traffic congestion. With the number of daily flights now exceeding 1,300, DIAL has coordinated with airlines and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to minimise disruption during the 90-day closure.

The affected runway, 10/28, is one of three at Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is India’s busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic. During the shutdown period, the remaining two runways—09/27 and 11R/29L—will continue to handle all air traffic.

In a statement, DIAL said, “The upgradation work of Runway 10/28 is crucial to enhance Delhi Airport’s operational resilience during low-visibility conditions. All affected stakeholders have been informed well in advance to ensure a smooth transition and mitigate inconvenience to passengers.”

Airline Advisories Ahead of Delhi Airport Upgrade

Airlines operating out of Indira Gandhi International Airport, including IndiGo, Air India, and others, have adjusted their schedules accordingly. Passengers are advised to confirm flight status in advance and factor in potential delays or cancellations when making travel plans during this period.

The project is part of a broader initiative to modernise Delhi Airport’s infrastructure and improve overall safety and efficiency.
