Bhutan's Gelephu International Airport is slated to turn into a major entry point to the Kingdom of Bhutan. Recently, a futuristic airport was unveiled as part of the plans, created by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), which combines sustainability and technology while drawing inspiration from the nation's pristine cultural legacy. The airport, which is part of the larger Gelephu Mindfulness City development, is ideally, and strategically, situated close to Bhutan's border with India and is expected to open in 2029.

Tradition Hand In Hand With Innovation

BIG's vision for the airport revolves around ecological harmony. The design features a modular diagrid structure crafted from locally sourced glulam timber, which will not only support sustainable building practices but also integrate traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship. Locally sourced wood will be adorned with intricate wood carvings, including dragons representing the past, present, and future of Bhutan. This conflation of modern architecture and cultural symbolism intends to create an airport that reflects Bhutan's commitment to both innovation and tradition.

Sustainable Design and Passenger Experience

The airport, which is 68,000 sq m in size, is expected to accommodate up to 123 aircraft per day and 1.3 million passengers annually by 2040. The construction is designed to be adapt and extend in response to the growing need for air transport. The "Forest Spine" courtyard, which separates the terminal's domestic and international areas, is one of the notable elements of the architecture. This area gives the terminal a breathable abundance of natural light, providing travellers with a drafty and walkable setting. An open, inviting ambience is guaranteed by the building's use of skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Environmental Sustainability

The operation of the building is also centred on sustainability. By collecting moisture from the air, the wooden construction controls humidity and creates a cosy interior atmosphere. While rooftop photovoltaic panels offer sustainable energy, open courtyard designs and roof ventilation promote natural ventilation. This strategy is consistent with Bhutan's steadfast dedication to environmental preservation, enhancing its standing as a carbon-negative nation worldwide.

The partnership between BIG and a number of engineering and aviation companies, including Arup and NACO, promises to create an airport that is both a vital entry point and a fully integrated component of Bhutan's environmental and cultural culture.
