Berlin's Spectacular Christmas Markets Return, But With a Catch

With November round the corner, European cities and towns are gearing up to hold their Christmas markets. Much like India&rsquos Diwali markets, Christmas markets are a popular event in European countries, often turning into huge tourist attractions.

Decorated with illuminated displays, they not only have booths selling Christmas-related products, from food to trinkets to d&eacutecor, they also offer a range of entertainment options.

According to reports, with the German government announcing that Christmas markets will be allowed this year (unlike last year), cities such as Berlin are preparing themselves for a spectacular show, starting November 22.

However, the markets have been asked to implement adequate pandemic containment regulations, which visitors will have to follow. According to Visit Berlin website, markets have been urged to implement appropriate hygiene concepts, such as distance rules, compulsory wearing of masks, safe routing, time slot tickets and limited visitor numbers. However, it is up to the markets if they want to implement the 3G (allow people with negative test report to enter) or the 2G rule (wherein visitors will have to present either proof of vaccination or recovery).

According to media reports, Christmas markets of Rotes Rathaus, Zitadelle Spandau and Gendarmenmarkt have already announced they will be following the 2G COVID-19 rule. However, so far, the Weihnachtsmarkt an der Ged&aumlchtnis-Kirche (near the Zoological Garden) has said they will follow the 3G rule.
