According to the official holiday notification issued by Metro Railway, Kolkata, late-night services will run on the North South corridor connecting Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram. The decision comes in response to the heavy footfall typically seen on Christmas, particularly around Park Street, Esplanade, Sealdah and adjoining areas that draw large crowds well into the night.

The Blue Line is the city’s busiest Metro corridor and passes through several major commercial, cultural and entertainment districts. With road congestion and parking restrictions common on Christmas evening, the extended Metro schedule is expected to provide a safer and more efficient alternative for travel.

Christmas Day Schedule And Service Timings

On December 25, the first Metro services on the Blue Line will begin at 6.50 am from both Shahid Khudiram and Dakshineswar ends. Trains will run throughout the day with a revised holiday timetable.

The last Metro service from Shahid Khudiram station is scheduled to depart at approximately 10:30 pm, while the final train from Dakshineswar will leave at around 10:23 pm. These timings are later than regular holiday schedules and are intended to accommodate passengers returning home after evening celebrations.

A total of 224 services will operate on the Blue Line on Christmas Day, with 112 trains running in the upward direction and 112 in the downward direction. This is slightly fewer than a regular weekday schedule but significantly more commuter-friendly than a standard holiday operation.

Stations along the route include major stops such as Park Street, Esplanade, Maidan, Chandni Chowk, Girish Park, Shyambazar, Dum Dum, Noapara and Dakshineswar, all of which typically see a surge in passenger numbers on Christmas.

What Commuters Should Know Before Travelling

Metro officials have advised passengers to check the holiday timetable in advance and plan their journeys accordingly, especially for late-night return trips. While services will continue until around 10:30 pm, train frequency may be slightly reduced during late evening hours.

Security arrangements at major stations are expected to be heightened due to the festive rush, and commuters are advised to arrive early and follow Metro safety guidelines. Normal fare structures will remain unchanged.

In addition to the Blue Line, the Green Line between Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V will also operate on a special Christmas schedule, running from early morning until around 10:20 pm, ensuring connectivity between key business and residential zones.
