Khao Phan-sa of Thailand is popularly described as a period of Buddhist Lent, when the monks remain in the monastery during the rainy season. In the earlier times, when there was no electricity and people used candles, the Thai people would present enormous candles to the monasteries. Slowly, the custom developed into a public function. The huge and attractive candles are taken out in a procession to the accompaniment of traditional dancing and singing. Although the candle festival takes place in many places, one of the best place to see it (July 29-31, 2015) is in the Muang district of Ubon Ratchathani province. The province is in north-eastern Thailand and about 630km from Bangkok. The procession of carved candles will travel from Sri Ubon Rattanaram temple to Thung Si Muang temple. The festival will also include a light and sound presentation, cultural shows, and handicrafts displays.
