If a modern-day genie were to ask a city dweller for wishes, he would be taken aback by the requests for no traffic. Road congestion takes up more mind space than cars on the street, and the situation only worsens every day. There may be a solution to fix that temporarily, however&mdashwith cable cars

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways has recently spoken about the need for futuristic technology for the transport sector in the company.  As per reports, the minister has suggested the use of passenger ropeways, the &ldquotransportation of New India&rdquo to ease the rising traffic congestion in the country.

For this purpose, WAPCOS (a State-owned organisation) has signed an MoU with the Doppelmayr Gaventa group, the largest ropeway manufacturer in the world. Doppelmayr, an Austria-based company, will build cable cars and ropeways in India. The company has been operational in over 95 countries.

&ldquoWe have identified 100 spots across Badrinath, Kedarnath, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and hilly areas where, instead of diesel and petrol buses, we can use ropeways and cable cars,&rdquo Gadkari said.  As per reports, officials even believe that populated parts of a city such as Chandni Chowk in Delhi can be made accessible through cable cars.

The move will not only help relieve congestion on the road, but will be an eco-friendly and pollution-free means of transport that will help increase connectivity in two-tier cities and hill stations.
