Budget Of Rs 244 Crore Approved For Eco-Friendly Tourism In Meghalaya

The central government has allocated Rs 244 crore to enhance sustainable tourism in Meghalaya. During a press conference in Shillong, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said that the state has emerged as a preferred tourist destination for both Indian and international travellers for its natural beauty. “We must ensure sustainable development by harnessing the immense possibilities in the tourism sector,” he said.

This investment positions Meghalaya as a vibrant destination in India's Northeast tourism circuit. Sonowal stated that the central government aims to develop the tourism sector further and has thus allocated the funds under the Swadesh Darshan scheme to promote eco-friendly tourism initiatives throughout the state.

Destinations That Are Being Developed

This initiative aims to transform iconic destinations such as Umiam Lake, Sohpetbneng, Krang Suri Falls, Siju Caves, and Nokrek Reserve into world-class tourist attractions.

The government also emphasises the development of cultural and spiritual tourism sites, such as Nartiang and the sacred groves of Mawphlang. Other enhanced tourist sites include Umiam Lake, Sohpetbneng Peak, Krang Suri Falls, Siju Caves, and the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve.

The minister also highlighted other projects, including the Rs 22,864 crore Greenfield High-Speed Corridor between Mawlyngkhung and Panchgram, which is set to significantly enhance regional connectivity and logistics. “Over 540 km of National Highways have been constructed, and urban mobility projects in New Shillong and Tura are being implemented under PM-DevINE,” Sonowal said.

Tourism For Local Employment

Tourism-led growth has become a key pillar of Meghalaya’s development, said Sonowal. Several recent state government initiatives have also led to local grassroots employment. In April 2025, in a move to enhance and make tourism more convenient in the state, the government of Meghalaya has started the "Tourist Buddies" initiative at four of its destinations namely, Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Dawki, and Mawlynnong.

While the move would work towards a seamless visitor experience that prioritises safety, it also comes as a major step towards responsible and community-driven tourism in the state. The goal behind the move can also be ascribed to better management of visitors and minimising disorder in busy areas. Led by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS), the initiative hopes to train local youth professionally to assist tourists.
