In todays tranquil Anandpur Sahib, its hard to visualise the violent events of the 17th and early 18th centuries, ignited by the arrest of Guru Tegh Bahadur in 1675 by the Mughals. The gurus increasing popularity had worried the Delhi court. Upon his refusal to recant his faith, he was beheaded. Gobind Rai was only nine when his fathers severed head was brought back to Anandpur. This was perhaps the first of many events that led him to declare, as the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, When all other means have failed, it is permissible to draw the sword. Nanaks religion of peace was about to turn into a military force.
