Bihar To Launch Ro-Ro Vessels On The Ganga To Boost River Tourism

India is home to numerous rivers that historically played a pivotal role in the growth of civilisations and the establishment of trade routes. This historical significance has opened up ample opportunities for river tourism within the country, offering an immersive approach to experiencing the nation's diverse landscapes. Realising the potential of river tourism, the Bihar government is set to introduce two Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off) vessels along the Ganga in Patna and Bhagalpur.

The service in Patna is reportedly scheduled to commence within a week, while the Bhagalpur service is still pending approval from the Forest Department.

The Roll-On Roll-Off Vessel Service

The roll-on roll-off vessel service will operate along the Digha Ghat-JP Ganga Path route, inviting locals and tourists to enjoy the splendour of the river and regional wildlife.

The vessel will be able to accommodate approximately 300 passengers per trip, with four to five daily excursions planned. For those intrigued by river cruises, this service offers the opportunity to reserve the entire vessel for private occasions. The exact ticket pricing is yet to be determined. The MV Ganga Vihar, which has been operational in Patna since February 2023, charges around INR 300 per person for a trip.

Ecological Concerns

Bhagalpur is known for the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary among its many tourist attractions. Concerns have been raised over the vessel service threatening the habitat of the endangered Gangetic dolphins, with people seeking assurance that the vessel service must not inflict any harm upon the endangered species.

The dolphin sanctuary is a dedicated protected area to conserve the endangered Gangetic dolphins. Spanning along the Ganges River, the sanctuary covers a stretch of water that is a critical habitat for these freshwater dolphins.
