Swiss International Air Lines is making a bigger play for India, and this time, it is looking south. From October 25, 2026, the airline will begin nonstop flights between Zurich and Bengaluru, marking its first-ever service to southern India and adding a third Indian destination to its network after Delhi and Mumbai. For Bengaluru, a city that has steadily grown into one of India’s most important international business gateways, the new route is another sign of how global airlines are increasingly chasing demand tied to technology, premium travel and corporate mobility.

Southern India Push

The new service will operate five times a week through the 2026–27 winter schedule, which runs until March 27, 2027. Flight LX140 will depart Zurich at 1:20 PM and land in Bengaluru at 2:55 AM the following day, while the return LX141 service will leave Bengaluru at 4:50 AM and arrive in Zurich at 10:50 AM local time. Flights from Zurich will operate daily except Mondays and Wednesdays, while departures from Bengaluru will run daily except Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bookings for the route opened on May 19 through swiss.com and travel agency partners.

For SWISS, Bengaluru is more than just another addition to the route map. The airline is positioning the city as a strategic gateway into one of Asia’s fastest-growing business and innovation ecosystems. Often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru has long attracted multinational technology firms, startups, research centres and global investment, making it a natural fit for a premium European carrier targeting high-yield travellers.

The airline says the route has been designed to cater to growing demand from corporate travellers, the technology sector, luxury leisure passengers and the large Indian diaspora spread across Europe. The addition also strengthens Lufthansa Group’s footprint in Bengaluru, where Lufthansa already operates services to Frankfurt and Munich. Zurich now becomes the group’s third European hub, linked directly to the city.

Expanding Long-Haul

The timing reflects a larger shift taking place in international aviation. Airlines are increasingly prioritising direct connections between global business hubs rather than routing passengers through traditional metro-heavy networks. Bengaluru’s rise as a major outbound travel market, combined with increasing premium demand from southern India, has turned the city into one of the country’s most closely watched long-haul aviation markets.

The launch will also improve onward connectivity for Indian travellers heading into Europe and North America through Zurich Airport and the wider Lufthansa Group network. Bengaluru Airport, meanwhile, sees the route as another milestone in its evolution into a larger international transfer hub. With connections to 78 domestic destinations, the airport is expected to funnel passengers from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities onto the new nonstop service through single-ticket itineraries.

Passengers on the Bengaluru route will have access to SWISS’s premium offerings across First, Business and Economy Class, including lounge access, Swiss-inspired onboard dining and onward connectivity through Zurich. The airline has also confirmed that its new Airbus A350 fleet will soon be deployed on additional intercontinental routes, including Johannesburg and Shanghai, following earlier launches on Boston and Seoul services.

SWISS expects five Airbus A350 aircraft to be in service by the end of the year, all equipped with the airline’s updated “SWISS Senses” cabin concept. The redesigned cabins are aimed at enhancing the long-haul travel experience with upgraded seating, refreshed interiors and improved comfort across all classes.

Winter Network Shift

Alongside the Bengaluru expansion, SWISS is also reshaping parts of its European network ahead of the winter season. The airline confirmed that services from Geneva to Berlin, Hamburg and Pristina will be suspended during the upcoming winter timetable due to ongoing global shortages of aircraft and engine parts affecting its Airbus A220 fleet. The adjustments are intended to improve fleet planning and operational reliability as supply chain issues continue to impact airlines worldwide.

Despite these temporary reductions, SWISS plans to operate a total of 88 destinations during the 2026–27 winter schedule, including 24 intercontinental and 60 European routes from Zurich and Geneva. For India, however, the larger story is becoming increasingly clear. Global airlines are no longer viewing the country only through Delhi and Mumbai. Bengaluru has firmly entered a new phase in its aviation journey—one where direct long-haul connectivity is being shaped by the city’s influence in technology, business and premium international travel.
