Tourist Entry To St Mary’s Island In Udupi Banned Temporarily

Due to the approaching monsoon and in order to ensure the safety of tourists, the Udupi district administration has implemented a four-month ban on tourist entry to St. Mary’s Island, a popular destination off the Malpe coast in Udupi. This ban took effect from May 16 and will last until September 15. During this period, all adventure water sports on the island will also be suspended, as sea waves intensify and wind speeds increase.

St Mary's Islands, also known as Thonsepar, are a captivating group of four small islands situated in the Arabian Sea, just off the scenic coast of Malpe in Udupi, Karnataka. Renowned for their unique geological formations and stunning natural beauty, the islands are a significant attraction for tourists. However, seasonal restrictions are enforced annually to ensure the safety of visitors due to the unpredictable tidal activity and rough sea conditions that occur during the monsoon season.

Precautions For Monsoon

Local authorities have stated that boat operations along the West Coast are strictly prohibited during the rainy season, adhering to Harbour Craft regulations designed to protect both tourists and the marine environment. This regulation is crucial as the monsoon can bring about treacherous conditions that pose risks to boat navigation and passenger safety.

During this year's summer holiday rush, which typically sees a notable increase in tourist influx, there have been several appeals from the public and local businesses to extend boat services and allow for various water adventure activities. Officials have maintained their stance, opting not to relax the existing restrictions due to safety concerns.

Tourism department officials have indicated that access to the islands will be completely banned starting May 16, as this marks the beginning of the monsoon season. However, there may be some flexibility for visitors to wade into the shallow waters near the beach until June 1, contingent upon favourable weather conditions. After June 1, protective barricades will be strategically placed along the beachline to prevent access, as emphasised by Deputy Director of Tourism, Chandrashekhar. This proactive measure is intended to safeguard both the islands and the safety of guests during the rainy months ahead.
