Air New Zealand Proposes Flat Beds in Economy

Air New Zealand seems to understand the woe of travellers and is working on introducing pod beds for economy class on some of its long-haul flights. The airline is calling it Economy Skynest and has filed a patent and trademark for it. The airline would also need to get this feature certified for safety from regulators. 

An introduction like this would surely change the way we fly, reduce a bit of jet lag and tiredness, especially those prone to back and neck pain. Though it might be well over a year before travellers will be able to cash in on such a luxury. As of now, the beds might become a feature in their Auckland to New York flight (17 hours and 40 minutes long), which will be launched next year.

Skynest will consist of six pods that will be 200cm long and 58cm wide. The six beds will be distributed across three levels. It will be similar to a sleeping pod hotel, offering amenities like blankets, earplugs, pillows and a curtain for privacy. There are even talks of introducing reading lights and charging points. If successful, the airline is open to licensing it to other airlines too. 

And the strain on the wallet Well, it would be separate from regular flight seats, like an extra amenity that you can cash in during the flight. Customers can also choose to book it in slots, and the crew will provide fresh bedding to each customer.
