Canada Tops As The Safest Destination, Here Are The Rest

With solo travel and female travellers rising, every destination is assessed based on how safe a tourist feels. To guide travellers worldwide on choosing a safe place to travel to, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has just unveiled its ninth annual State of Travel Insurance report, which lists 15 countries considered the safest based on extensive research.

To compile the list, BHTP surveyed 1,702 individuals about their travel experiences and integrated data from reputable third-party sources evaluating safety concerns like terrorism, weather emergencies, health measures, and the safety of underrepresented groups. The criteria also considered assessments from the Global Peace Index and the State Department's travel safety ratings.

If you are embarking on an international trip on your own or with your friends and wondering which destinations would be the safest, the list draws out 15 names you must consider.

The List

Canada secures the top spot on this year's list of the safest countries for travellers, attributed to its low violent crime and stringent gun laws. Switzerland follows closely and is recognised for its security and low crime rates. Next on the list is Norway, which is popular among tourists for viewing the Northern Lights. While Norway offers fantastic views, the low crime rate earned them a second spot on the list.

In the third position lies Ireland, known for its Cliffs of Moher and Guinness, which assures travellers with fewer homicides in 2022 than 16 U.S. cities. The Netherlands, a repeat from last year's top spot, maintains its reputation for safety, with survey respondents consistently expressing a sense of security.

The United Kingdom, with its beautiful countryside and low crime rates, remains a reliable choice for travellers, although an upcoming entry fee is anticipated. Next is the vibrant country of Portugal, which attracts digital nomads for its sunny beaches, secure cities, and peaceful rural areas, earning a spot as one of the best destinations for solo female travellers in 2022. Meanwhile, Denmark, Iceland, and Australia follow with their low crime rates and unique attractions.

Next lies New Zealand, albeit expensive, captivates outdoor enthusiasts with its pristine landscapes and low crime rates. And if you are considering touring East Asia, Japan makes it to the list, owing to its renowned culture of politeness and orderliness.

Though France is infamous for petty crimes and demonstrations that may hinder travel, the country makes it due to safety from disease epidemics. Next is Spain, another European gem, for its low crime rating, thanks to its appeal as a hub for tourists.

In the final position is Brazil, recognised for its beautiful beaches, with survey respondents, especially women, people of colour, and LGBTQ+ individuals, reporting a sense of safety.

While these countries are deemed safe for travel overall, it's crucial to note that safety conditions may vary within a country, and the possibility of natural disasters is not accounted for in the report. As always, travellers are advised to exercise caution, remain vigilant against petty theft, and stay informed about local conditions.
