Airports have increasingly become destinations in their own right. They are no longer just places where journeys begin and end, but spaces where travellers shop, dine, rest, and occasionally spend hours willingly. The latest Skytrax World Airport Awards 2026 reflects exactly that shift, with airports across Asia continuing to dominate the rankings and Singapore’s Changi Airport once again claiming the coveted title of the world’s best airport.

The annual rankings, considered among the most influential benchmarks in global aviation, are based on passenger surveys conducted across a wide range of categories, from terminal comfort and cleanliness to shopping, dining, and overall travel experience. This year marks Changi Airport’s fourteenth time at the top since the awards began in 2000, further cementing its reputation as one of the most admired aviation hubs in the world.

For Indian travellers, there is more good news. Five airports from India have secured places in Skytrax’s list of the world’s top 100 airports, with Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport leading the pack.

Asian Airports Lead

The top of the rankings remains firmly dominated by Asia. Following Singapore Changi Airport in first place is South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, which climbed from fourth place last year to secure the second spot. Tokyo’s Haneda Airport retained its third-place ranking, while Hong Kong International Airport moved up to fourth position. Narita International Airport in Japan completed the top five.

Europe also maintained a strong presence in the upper ranks. Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport rose to sixth place, followed by Rome Fiumicino Airport in seventh. Istanbul Airport made one of the most notable jumps, climbing from fourteenth position in 2025 to eighth this year. Munich Airport retained its ninth-place ranking, while Vancouver International Airport rounded out the top ten.

The rankings highlight a broader trend that has become increasingly evident over the past decade: airports are competing not just on operational efficiency but on experience. Dining options, architecture, passenger services, green spaces, entertainment offerings, and ease of transit have become key differentiators in a highly competitive industry.

That is one reason Changi continues to stand apart. Beyond functioning as a major global transit hub, the airport has become famous for attractions such as Jewel Changi, home to the world's tallest indoor waterfall, extensive gardens, art installations, and leisure spaces that attract visitors even when they are not flying.

India Climbs Higher

Among Indian airports, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport delivered the strongest performance. Ranked 28th globally, it improved four places from its 32nd position in 2025 and remained the highest-ranked airport in the country. The airport was also recognised as the Best Airport in India and South Asia.

Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport followed at 41st place. The airport has steadily built a reputation for its passenger-friendly design and sustainability initiatives, and it was once again named the Best Regional Airport in India and South Asia, marking its third consecutive win in that category.

Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport secured the 43rd position, reflecting the city's growing importance as both a business and aviation hub. Meanwhile, Goa's relatively new Manohar International Airport entered the rankings at 64th place, signalling a strong start for the airport that serves one of India's most visited leisure destinations.

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport completed India's representation on the list at 66th position, maintaining its place among the world's leading airports despite operating within one of the country's busiest aviation markets.

Beyond The Rankings

While rankings often spark debate, they also offer an interesting snapshot of how traveller expectations are evolving. Increasingly, passengers are looking beyond efficient check-ins and on-time departures. They want better food, smoother immigration processes, thoughtful design, comfortable lounges, retail experiences, and spaces that make long layovers feel less like an inconvenience.

For India, the presence of five airports in the world's top 100 reflects years of investment in airport infrastructure and passenger experience. With several major airport expansion projects underway across the country and new terminals opening in key cities, Indian aviation is steadily strengthening its position on the global stage.

As international travel continues to rebound and competition among airports intensifies, the race for passenger satisfaction is becoming just as important as the race for new routes. For now, though, Singapore's Changi Airport remains the benchmark that the rest of the world is trying to catch.
