The Thailand government recently announced that tourists will have to stay for a longer period when visiting the island country. Starting this October, foreign tourists will have to stay for at least 30 days, the first 14 days being in quarantine, the Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn told Reuters.
Travellers will have to spend the quarantine period in the limited vicinity area of their hotel and only then will they be allowed to explore other places. Visitors will have to take two coronavirus tests during quarantine before they are able to travel to the rest of the island. They will also have to undergo an additional test and stay within the province for one more week, before they can travel across Thailand.
The announcement comes after talks of creating air bubbles with partner countries were suspended due to a surge in number of COVID-19 cases in Asia.
Thailand has opened its borders for tourism, a major source of revenue for the country. Phuket will be the first destination inviting tourists. This tourism agenda was operated under a proposal called the 'Phuket Model', a new normal' style of tourism that provides limited travel access with a limited number of tourists.
Thailand has been quite successful in handling COVID-19 cases and the announcement comes as a step to revive the economy and the tourism sector.
