The tourism industry is undergoing a remarkable transformation, marked by a growing interest in offbeat adventures that capture the imagination of travellers. This shift is greatly facilitated by significant improvements in infrastructure, such as more efficient transportation options, better accommodations, and enhanced connectivity. Additionally, updated visa regulations have simplified the travel process, making it more accessible and convenient for a wider range of enthusiasts. As a result, a notable number of Indians are venturing beyond traditional tourist spots and opting to explore unique and lesser-known destinations around the globe. These offbeat locales offer rich cultural experiences for Indian travellers, breathtaking landscapes, and opportunities for adventure that cater specifically to those seeking memorable and distinctive travel experiences.
A recent Cleartrip report reveals an exciting trend: both Gen Z and senior citizens are increasingly embracing affordable and off-the-beaten track travel options. Furthermore, flexible travel payment methods are becoming a favourite, especially among Gen Z, who are adopting these options at 1.4 times the rate of other groups.
"With relaxed visa and travel policies, Southeast Asian destinations have emerged as travellers' top choices," said Cleartrip Chief Business and Growth Officer Anuj Rathi, speaking to PTI. "This year also marked a rise in the adoption of affordable travel options, particularly among GenZ and Senior Citizens, and an increase in flexible travel payment methods".
The report highlights that Southeast Asia has emerged as a top choice for Indian travellers, primarily thanks to visa-free policies that make international travel easier than ever. A standout example is the remarkable 73 per cent surge in bookings to Denpasar (Bali) when compared to 2023. This boom is linked to Indigo's launch of direct flights from Bengaluru to Bali, significantly enhancing accessibility and enticing more travelers to explore this stunning destination.
Additionally, other international hotspots are experiencing impressive growth as well: Tbilisi in Georgia has increased by 27 per cent, Tashkent has doubled with a 100 per cent rise, Almaty enjoys a 73 per cent boost, Da Nang has grown by 60 per cent, and Baku has skyrocketed by an incredible 133 per cent.
On the domestic front, Indian travellers are gravitating towards beach and island destinations in 2024. Bookings to Agatti Island in Lakshadweep have soared by 94 per cent, while Diu boasts a staggering growth of 130 per cent. This trend is bolstered by the introduction of direct flights—Indigo now connects Bengaluru to Agatti, and FLY91 links Goa to Diu—making these idyllic locations more accessible and appealing than ever.
Booking.com's data provides a detailed look at the evolving travel landscape for 2024, highlighting a fascinating blend of local and global destinations. Remarkably, Goa has emerged as the top searched destination, witnessing an astonishing 200 per cent increase in flight searches year-over-year. This surge can be attributed to its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and a resurgence of interest in domestic tourism.
Indian travellers are increasingly seeking cultural and spiritual experiences, leading to significant rises in searches for destinations that offer rich historical and spiritual significance. Amritsar, for instance, has seen a 106 per cent jump in flight searches compared to 2023, driven primarily by its iconic Golden Temple and festivals that attract spiritual seekers.
On a global scale, well-known cities like Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, London, and Bangkok continue to captivate Indian travellers, with flight searches reflecting an impressive year-over-year increase ranging from 90 to 150 per cent. This trend indicates a robust appetite for international travel, where iconic landmarks, diverse cuisines, and vibrant city life await.
In addition to well-trodden paths, the ease of travel has sparked interest in offbeat destinations that were previously not on many travellers' radar. Shahdag in Azerbaijan has emerged as a surprising favourite, becoming the most searched international destination based on accommodation inquiries in 2024, says the data. This hidden gem offers stunning natural landscapes and unique experiences, encouraging travelers to venture off the beaten path and explore new adventures. Embrace these trends in 2025, if you haven't already, for a travel experience that is as enriching as it is exciting.
