The German National Tourist Board has stepped up efforts to protect inbound tourism to Germany as the Middle East conflict creates fresh uncertainty for global travel. It has set up a crisis task force to track developments and assess their impact on key markets, with weekly findings shaping adjustments to its international promotion of Destination Germany.

Industry Briefings Rolled Out

The German National Tourist Board has also opened a new line of communication with industry and political stakeholders, holding two webinars on April 14 and 15 that drew around 200 participants. The sessions outlined possible knock-on effects of the West Asia conflict on inbound travel, with discussion ranging from likely shifts in demand across key markets to practical responses such as reallocating budgets, reshaping campaigns and stepping up short-term promotions. Summaries and updates from these briefings have been published on the board’s website and will be revised as the situation develops.

The Germany Travel Mart, held from 19 to 21 April in Oberhausen, also served to continue talks with overseas trade partners and media. Tours held ahead of the event offered a first look at tourism activity across North Rhine-Westphalia.

Germany’s largest B2B platform for inbound travel drew around 200 key buyers and some 80 media representatives from more than 30 countries, with a notably strong presence from India among both trade and press.

Industry Ties Take Centre Stage

“Especially in times of economic uncertainty and geostrategic conflicts, it is extremely important to maintain personal contacts within the industry,” said Petra Hedorfer, chief executive of the German National Tourist Board. She added that a central focus of this year’s Germany Travel Mart was dialogue with key tour operators and online travel platforms on the geopolitical climate and the likely effects of the ongoing conflict on inbound travel.

Hedorfer also pointed to the event as a chance to underline Germany’s appeal, citing its value for money, strong service standards and a pipeline of new tourism offerings.

India Market In Focus

Romit Theophilus of the German National Tourist Board said India remains a key growth market for Germany. “India continues to be one of the most dynamic and high-potential source markets for Germany. We are seeing sustained interest from Indian travellers, particularly in cultural experiences, scenic regions, and premium travel offerings,” he said. He added that forums such as the Germany Travel Mart are helping build closer ties with the trade while giving Indian audiences a clearer sense of what Germany has to offer.

Interest from Indian travellers to Germany is continuing to rise, with demand centred on cultural heritage, higher-end travel and growing interest in more sustainable trips. Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, the Rhine Valley, Berlin and Munich remain the main draws, while smaller regions are beginning to attract visitors looking for something beyond the usual itineraries.
