Sunbathers may flock to nearby beaches to enjoy the sunny August weather. Locals may be wandering around in T-shirts, but Christmas has already arrived at the northern Spanish city of Vigo.
The city has started with festive decorations and put up their Christmas lights as it plans to roll out the world's largest display when the holiday season finally comes around. According to mayor, Abel Caballero, the city has spent $ 949,000 on the lighting that will cover 334 streets, and 450 trees, with over ten million LED lights and other ornaments. The city's Christmas celebrations attracts thousands of tourists each year.
Apparently, the lighting has been put in place months earlier than usual because protocols to protect workers from COVID-19 could slow down the proceedings.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Vigo has brushed off concerns about the pandemic and has promised that protective measures to limit crowding on streets will be in place.
&ldquoLet the mayors of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Berlin know that we&rsquore going to be simply the best,&rdquo said mayor Abel Caballero.
For the locals of Vigo, the lights mean a big deal with visitors arriving en masse from around the world for the switching on ceremony usually held towards the end of November.
Vigo isn&rsquot the only Spanish city where Christmas has come early. The southern city of Malaga had earlier announced that it had already begun installation of its Christmas displays.
