An important turning point in Singapore's aviation industry has been reached with the formal onset of construction on Terminal 5 (T5) at Changi Airport. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong presided over the groundbreaking ceremony on May 14, 2025, which marked the beginning of what is expected to be Changi Airport's most extensive expansion to date. Built to handle the expected increase in air traffic throughout Asia, T5 is set to revolutionise aviation standards when it is finished in the mid-2030s.
The focal point of the vast 1,080-hectare Changi East development project is Terminal 5. In its first phase, this mega-terminal is expected to accommodate up to 50 million people annually, bringing Changi Airport's total capacity to almost 140 million passengers annually. The construction also includes the addition of a third runway, which is now being used by the military. It is expected to be completed by 2030. The capacity and operational effectiveness of the airport are intended to be improved by this development.
The T5 project is in line with Singapore's strategic goal to strengthen its position as a major international aviation hub. At the moment, Changi Airport links Singapore with about 170 places across the globe. This figure is only anticipated to rise above 200 once Terminal 5 is finished, further solidifying Singapore's standing in global aviation.
T5's design includes elements intended to improve resilience and adaptation in response to the difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. When needed, the terminal will be able to function as smaller sub-terminals, with areas that can be used as testing or quarantine facilities. Furthermore, modern ventilation systems are also incorporated into the design to enhance air quality and lower the possibility of the spread of airborne illnesses.
Contracts totalling about SGD 4.75 billion (USD 3.6 billion) have been granted by the Changi Airport Group for the substructure and airside infrastructure projects of T5. These expenditures demonstrate Singapore's dedication to creating aviation infrastructure that is ready for the future and can adapt to the changing demands of international air travel.
T5 will have cutting-edge features designed to improve the traveller experience. These consist of biometric immigration clearance, automated baggage handling and check-in systems, and sophisticated security screening procedures. Additionally, the Thomson-East Coast MRT line will connect the terminal to Singapore's city centre, allowing travellers to move with ease.
It is projected that the construction of Terminal 5 at Changi Airport will stimulate Singapore's economy and create jobs.
