The Bikaner Municipal Corporation has introduced the Bikaner Heritage Walk, an initiative aimed at promoting heritage conservation and inviting locals and travelers to explore the city's rich history and culture. This initiative also seeks to raise awareness among stakeholders and involve them in future planning to preserve Bikaner’s legacy.

In tandem with the walk, the Bikaner District Administration and Municipal Corporation have established the Heritage Conservation Cell and the Bikaner District Heritage Committee to restore the city’s historic landmarks. The Heritage Conservation Cell will identify and document Bikaner’s cultural assets, including havelis, temples, crafts, and traditions. Efforts will include restoration projects, public awareness campaigns, and sustainable tourism initiatives, balancing development with preservation

Celebrating The City Of Havelis

Bikaner, known as the “city of a thousand havelis,” is renowned for its intricately carved stone facades, traditional architecture, and urban design adapted to the desert climate. However, neglect, modern construction, and environmental challenges threaten its heritage. Lokayan, a local non-profit, has worked for two decades to protect these structures. Secretary Gopal Singh noted that over 200 havelis have been lost in recent decades, underscoring the urgency for action.

Despite challenges, some haveli owners have restored their properties, including the Mohta, Rampuria, Sonawat, and Kothari Havelis. The Bikaner Heritage Walk will feature visits to these restored landmarks, starting from Bikaji ki Tekri and traversing the old city’s streets, markets, and cultural sites. Participants will experience local crafts, such as juti-making and textile printing, and conclude the journey at the iconic Rampuria Haveli.

This initiative underscores Bikaner’s commitment to preserving its heritage while promoting sustainable tourism.
