Art, culture, and coffee&mdashamong a host of other exciting things, just one visit to Vienna is never enough. Recently Vienna was in the news, having been voted as the world's 'most liveable city', two years running, in the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Ranking annual index.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), affiliated with The Economist, has just revealed its rating of the world's most liveable cities for 2023. It assessed 173 cities worldwide based on various important aspects such as health care, education, stability, infrastructure, and the environment. The EIU's Global Liveability Index ranked Vienna on top, referring to the quality infrastructure, excellent culture and entertainment, and education and health facilities. Vienna, which has held the top spot multiple times in the past, was closely followed by Copenhagen in Denmark, which maintained its second-place position.

Meanwhile, Melbourne and Sydney (Australia), now in third and fourth place, have moved up to fill spots claimed last year by Western European cities. Three cities in Canada, two in Switzerland, and another two in Asia (a New Zealand and a Japanese city are joint tenths) make up the rest of the top ten positions.

The report stated that Asia-Pacific cities have made some of the biggest gains in 2023, accounting for eight of the top ten movers up the rankings, helped by a shift towards normalcy after the pandemic. Wellington (New Zealand) soared by 35 places to 23rd place, Auckland (New Zealand) by 25, while Hanoi (Vietnam) moved up 20 spots. The New Zealand cities saw a big tumble in 2022 when covid waves forced intermittent lockdowns.

The Middle East has seen the average level of liveability continue to improve, mainly owing to solid gains in healthcare and education ratings. The strongest performers were the cities of Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, both rising by five places. In the UAE, although Abu Dhabi did not go up the ranks, its scores improved to 80, helping it achieve the top-tier status of liveability.

Here are the top 10 cities by rank Vienna in Austria, Copenhagen in Denmark, Melbourne in Australia, Sydney in Australia, Vancouver in Canada, Zurich in Switzerland, Calgary in Canada, Geneva in Switzerland, Toronto in Canada, Osaka in Japan, and Auckland in New Zealand.
