In October 2023, the Pune Forest Department inaugurated grassland safaris in Maharashtra's Pune and Solapur districts, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to delve into this vast ecosystem's heart.

“The inititiative has already attracted over 120 visitors and 30 bookings in the first 20 days,“ said Mayur Bothe, assistant conservator of forests, Pune Forest Division and project in-charge of the grassland safari. Officials also said that they are expecting more visitors during winter as it is a good season to sight many wild animals.

The entry cost for two-wheelers is Rs 1,500, and the fee for four-wheelers is Rs 2,000. People are currently visiting the safari in private vehicles. Depending on footfall, the department intends to launch an in-house travel facility. In the future, the forest department intends to launch a leopard safari in Junnar and a wildlife safari in Baramati.

About The Grasslands

Covering approximately 12.3 million hectares, the grasslands hold a crucial place in the state's biodiversity, and the newly introduced safari aims to offer a distinctive experience and contribute to conservation efforts. This initiative stands out in a state where the total grassland area has faced a significant reduction, dwindling from 18 million hectares to the current 12.3 million hectares. The Pune and Solapur grassland safari, set against the backdrop of this expansive ecosystem, seeks to address the challenges of mismanagement and dwindling grassland areas.

The grassland safari unfolds in Kadbanwadi in Indapur tehsil and Shirsufal in Baramati tehsil. These areas, teeming with unique ecosystems, serve as a habitat for diverse wildlife, including hyenas, wolves, jackals, foxes, and various migratory and resident bird species. The online portal for safari bookings is now accessible, inviting nature enthusiasts to embark on a journey that not only promises a glimpse of Maharashtra's rich biodiversity but also fosters an understanding of the importance of grassland conservation.

Be A Considerate And Responsible Visitor

Several experts have sounded a warning on making fragile areas with wildlife ecosystems into tourism hubs. Visitors to these areas have to be more considerate of the requirements of animals and their surroundings, as they frequently interfere with their natural state. Being a responsible traveller entails having positive wildlife experiences that do not harm or promote animal confinement. Check here and here for some suggestions for ethical wildlife excursions.
