Recent updates on the COVID-19 front reveal a concerning resurgence as a new variant emerges. The central government has issued advisories to all states, urging stricter public health measures to curb the transmission of the virus. This surge in infections, notably in Kerala, has prompted heightened vigilance across the country.

On December 8, reports surfaced of the first case of a new sub-variant of COVID-19, JN.1, in the southern state, sparking worries about potential health risks resurfacing after a two-year hiatus from India's last pandemic-related lockdown. Identified as a descendant of an Omicron sub-variant, the JN.1 variant (BA.2.86.1.1) is raising concerns due to its potential to evade immunity from prior vaccinations or infections.

In response, Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant emphasised the importance of sustained vigilance over the COVID situation.

Acknowledging successful collaborative efforts between central and state governments in maintaining low infection rates, Pant highlighted the ongoing circulation of the virus. He stressed the need to adapt to its behaviour in line with Indian weather conditions and other prevalent pathogens, urging continued momentum in addressing public health challenges.

Measures To Be Taken

To bolster surveillance, the Central Government has urged states to strictly adhere to operational guidelines for COVID-19 surveillance and ensure comprehensive testing across all districts. Pant emphasized the monitoring and reporting of influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness in health facilities, utilizing platforms like the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) to detect early trends in case numbers.

Additionally, states have been directed to send positive samples for genome sequencing to Indian SARS COV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) laboratories to identify new virus variants. Furthermore, states are expected to engage both public and private health facilities in preparedness drills organized by the Union Health Ministry.

Responding to the presence of the new variant in Kerala, the Karnataka state Government has mandated mask-wearing in public for individuals aged 60 and above and those with comorbidities. Classified as a 'variant of interest' by the World Health Organization (WHO), the JN.1 variant has been detected in Singapore, United States, China, and India.

These recent developments underscore the necessity of a collective and proactive approach in managing the evolving landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic. As governments and health authorities intensify efforts, adherence to guidelines and heightened vigilance remain crucial in navigating these uncertain times.

Necessary Precautions for Travellers

To ensure safety during travels in these times, here are vital steps to consider:

Stay Informed: Understand COVID guidelines at your departure and arrival locations. Prepare for potential scenarios if you test positive during your trip.

Review Policies: Check airline cancellation policies for COVID-related changes. Consider travel insurance covering such circumstances.

Pack Wisely: Carry extra medication and essentials for a possible extended stay. Verify health insurance coverage abroad.

Know Hotel Flexibility: Inquire about hotel rules for possible extensions due to illness. Opt for places with nearby quarantine facilities if needed.

Research Medical Assistance: Know available healthcare services at your destination. Seek immediate help if unwell and explore evacuation options if required.

Protect Yourself and Others: If someone falls ill, isolate and take precautions within your group. Wear masks, maintain distance, and practice good hygiene.
