Serving as the inaugural home of independent India's Parliament, Central Vista symbolizes India's democratic spirit. On May 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate a new building in Central Vista.

Originally designed by renowned British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, the present Parliament House is a colonial-era structure that took six years to construct, spanning from 1921 to 1927. Initially known as the Council House, it housed the Imperial Legislative Council during that time. Responding to the need for additional space, two floors were added in 1956, and in 2006, the Parliament Museum was established to showcase India's rich democratic heritage spanning over 2,500 years. Over the years, the building underwent substantial modifications to adapt to the requirements of a modern Parliament.

The grand inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building, set to take place on May 28, will span seven hours. It will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The foundation stone for the new Parliament Building was laid by the Prime Minister on December 10, 2020. Spanning an expansive area of 65,000 square meters, the new Parliament will feature a striking triangular design, while maintaining its harmonious integration with the old Parliament building.

According to the Government of India's official website, the decision to construct a new Parliament building was necessitated by several factors. These included limited seating capacity, deteriorating infrastructure, outdated communication resources, and inadequate workspace. The new Parliament building aims to address these shortcomings and provide a contemporary and efficient environment for the functioning of the nation's legislative body.
