Countries across the globe are easing their travel restrictions and getting ready to welcome travellers. In order to revive tourism in their respective countries, governments are offering lucrative offers such waiving off visa fee, or funding the trip for COVID infected tourists.
Cambodia, however, seems to be taking a different path than most of the others. The country has announced that international tourists will now have to deposit a $3,000 coronavirus deposit. The deposit has to be made upon arrival at the Cambodian airports, in cash or credit. It will cover any costs related to COVID-19, including testing, admission and facilities, if anyone is found positive. The government has released a detailed list of the breakdown and what the will cover.
All travellers will have to undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test upon arrival, the cost of which will be deducted from the deposit as well. And if any person on the same flight as you tests positive, all the other passengers will be quarantined for 14 days, the cost of which again will be deducted from the deposit.
Additionally, travellers will also have to present a proof of health insurance with a cover of at least $50,000. In case a patient dies from the virus, the country will also deduct $1,500 from the deposit, or it will be claimed from the insurance.
