Perched in the lush embrace of the Western Ghats, about 123 kilometres from Pune, Matheran is a hill station unlike any other. Discovered in May 1850 by Hugo Poyentz Malet, the then collector of Thane, it was Lord Elphinstone who recognised its potential and developed it into a charming hill retreat. Thanks to its elevation of over 2,000 feet above sea level, Matheran offered a cooler, less humid alternative to Bombay’s sweltering climate—soon becoming a preferred summer escape for British officials, many of whom built elegant mansions here.
True to its name, which translates to “forest on the mountaintop,” Matheran remains an oasis of calm. Declared an eco-sensitive region by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, it is Asia’s only hill station where motor vehicles are completely banned. This automobile-free status lends Matheran a timeless charm—its quiet trails are best explored on foot, horseback, or in hand-pulled rickshaws. With dense forests, fresh mountain air, and scenic viewpoints like Panorama Point and Echo Point, Matheran continues to offer a refreshing retreat, far removed from the chaos of city life.
