November marks the onset of winter in India, and for those of us seeking the charm of snow-laden landscapes, many destinations provide this enchanting experience. While most of the country is still embracing the elegance of October, many regions are welcoming the first snowflakes of the season. From the northern heights of Himachal Pradesh to the picturesque valleys of Uttarakhand, these five destinations in India promise a spectacular display of snowfall in November. Take a virtual journey through these five locations, each offering a distinct and breathtaking encounter with the first touch of winter. 

1. Gulmarg, Kashmir

Gulmarg, one of the most spectacular winter destinations in India, was founded during the British era and used mainly as a ski resort due to the snowfall it receives from November to February. If you are a winter sports enthusiast, then Gulmarg, located just 46 km away from Srinagar, is among the best places to go for in southeast Asia. This enchanting snowland is a favourite amongst honeymooners, snow lovers and skiing enthusiasts from all over the world.

2. Ladakh 


Ladakh in winter promises breathtaking white scenery that is well suited for both photography and making memories. During winters, the lakes are frozen, and the temperatures fall below 0°C. The Zanskar River also starts to freeze as well. For those who are not a fan of cold weather can visit Ladakh between April and July. However, thrill seekers often visit the place during the winter season. Trekking and skiing are among the most popular activities in many areas in Ladakh. 

3. Kufri, Himachal Pradesh

Winter in northern India usually starts from the onset of November and ends in March, with temperatures dropping to sub-zero levels in some regions. If you’re one of those who loves winter sports and related activities such as skiing, then you should check out Kufri during this time. Kufri gets its name from one of the most ancient and largest Buddhist monasteries in India, the Tawang Monastery. If you’re lucky, you might witness snowfall during your trip here.  

4. Auli, Uttarakhand

Perched at an altitude of around 9,200 feet from sea level, Auli starts receiving its snowfall in November. Its splendid vistas attract many tourists and thrill seekers. A renowned trekking and skiing destination, it is surrounded by oak trees and cone-bearing plants. The tourist spot gives a scenic view of the magnificent Himalayan ranges. 

5. Lachung, Sikkim

You’ll be welcomed with a thick cover of snow when you visit the place in the winter months. This tiny, beautiful hill town charms tourists with fantastic winter, verdant peaks, lustrous waterfalls and other popular attractions. Do visit the Lachung monastery here. Also, don’t forget to try the excellent quality peaches, apples and apricots here. Other highlights of the local markets are blankets and finely woven rugs. Surrounded by the Himalayas and colourful flowers, Lachung is near the Chinese border.
