As Diwali, the festival of lights, approaches, the air becomes infused with excitement and anticipation. It's a time for celebration, togetherness, and the illumination of countless diyas (lamps). However, for some, the festive tradition of bursting firecrackers during Diwali can be overwhelming. The loud noises and air pollution accompanying these celebrations might not suit everyone's preferences. If you're seeking a quieter and more serene Diwali, there are numerous places where you can escape the crackers and still savour the essence of this beautiful festival.

Sikiajhora, West Bengal

Tucked within the Buxa Tiger Reserve, the place takes its name from the meandering hilly stream which flows down to meet the Bala River. Though a bit far-fetched, it is often called the ‘Amazon of the Dooars’. The biggest attraction here is a riverboat safari, which takes you inside the depths of the forest. The forest is known for its bird life. It is also elephant territory, and hence, utmost caution is needed. It is about 15km by road from Rajabhatkhawa, a small town just outside the tiger reserve where accommodation is available.

Getting There

To reach Sikiajhora, one can take a train from Howrah or Sealdah railway stations to New Alipurduar Junction, the nearest major railway station. From there, Sikiajhora is about a 2-hour drive by car or taxi, approximately 60 kilometres away. Alternatively, several buses are available from Kolkata to Alipurduar, and then a local transport or taxi can be taken to reach Sikiajhora.

Anglers can ask homestay owners to arrange for a visit to the fishing point. There are orchards, orchid gardens, and ginger farms in the vicinity. You may also pay a visit to the Sanghen Dorjee Monastery near Pedong. Perched at a height of 6,000 feet, Sillery Gaon is about 25km from the popular hill station of Kalimpong. An unassuming village, it is a place for those who want to take a break from the frenetic pace of life. Perched at 8,000 feet, this tiny hilltop village gives the feeling of being far away from anywhere, though it is not so. It is a stop on Sikkim’s famous Silk Route. Misty green hills dovetailing into each other form a ring around the village and the valleys around it. Go on a village exploration tour, trek to the hilltop monastery, or simply spend your time enjoying the mountain vista. If you are coming from Rongli (from where permits for a visit to the Silk Route have to be obtained), Phadamchen is about 20km away, but it takes longer because of the mountain road. It is ahead of Zuluk, the first point on the Silk Route and about 10km away.
