Somewhere deep down, Himalaya-watchers are often thought of as lonely creatures toiling away in pursuit of their solitary fascinations with the mountains. This is to a certain extent true, but thankfully there are gatherings to which they flock, to be with others like them, to pool their individual obsessions into a collective space that holds interests, experiences and histories up to sympathetic mirrors. The Mussoorie Writers Festival, held between November 1 and 4, and curated by Stephen Alter, was one such space. Legends like Dr Charles Clarke, Dr Shekhar Pathak and Harish Kapadia joined Mussoorie&rsquos own littérateurs at Landour&rsquos Woodstock School for three days of intense mountain love. Less &lsquowriterly&rsquo than previous iterations of the festival, given the sheer diversity of the field, this year&rsquos version was called &lsquoExperience the Himalaya&rsquo, and it went some way towards fulfilling its goal.
