The western state of Maharashtra is known for its rugged forts and the trekking trails that ascend to them. The fort of Ratangad, which translates to the 'jewel of forts', is located in the Ahmednagar district. It stands proudly by the bank of the Bhandardara Lake. The Ratangad trek in Maharashtra is one of the most thrilling trails the Sahyadri hills offer. To reach the base in the village of Ratanwadi, you have to cross the Bhandardara Lake, take a 6km boat ride, and then walk 4km. Multiple passages lead to the peak of the fort. The moderately steep slope through the dense forests along the Pravara stream is the more popular route, while the route from Samrad is relatively more challenging. The fort offers breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, including Kalsubai, Ajoba, Kulang, Alang, and more.
