Sunset Sojourns At Black Sand Beaches

OT Staff

Think beach, and you'd think of golden sand being washed over by foamy blue waves as the sun shines brightly. But that image may not always hold true, especially when you set foot on these four unique black sand beaches along India's west coast. Yes, they are not just in Iceland!

Tilmati Beach, Karnataka

Tilmati beach in Karwar is a short but serene stretch of black sand

Located in the Uttara Kannada district, roughly 435 km via road from Bangalore, Tilmati Beach in Karwar is a favourite among tourists for its striking beauty. The black sesame-like sand, after which the beach is named (til meaning "sesame seeds" and mati meaning "soil"), stands out to everybody who visits. The black colour of the sand is considered its natural and authentic character as many basaltic rocks surround it. The best way to take in its beauty is by spending some quiet time with your close ones during sunset or sunrise.

Navapur Beach, Maharashtra

Sunset at Navapur beach

For Punekars, there's good news! This uniquely beautiful beach is just five hours away from bustling city life. Located in the tiny municipality of Navapur, it is a well-kept secret waiting to be unravelled. Fringed with coconut trees and sprinkled with local food stalls that serve poha, chai, vada pav around - it is the perfect spot for a family picnic or an outing with friends.

Kovalam Beach, Kerala

Kovalam Beach, Kerala

Vast, clean, and beautiful, this beach is absolutely picture-perfect. As one of the most well-known beaches in India, it offers visitors a host of fun activities to choose from and enjoy. And if fun is not your way to go, you can take it easy while feasting on delectable coastal dishes from shacks dotting the shore.

Revdanda Beach, Maharashtra

Revdanda is along the Maharashtra coast near Murud-Janjira Fort

When you reach Revdanda beach, it almost feels like you're staring at a beautiful photo. An abandoned fort overlooks the beach to add to the picturesque view. Although it is just a few hours from Pune and Mumbai, the beach is a hidden gem yet to be discovered. It's pristine beauty makes it the perfect place to unwind and catch a moment of solitude.
