If Machilipatnam is proud of its past, its careful not to show it. You look around for traces of a once-upon-a-time famous port and all you come away with are glimpses of typical small-town Andhra Pradesh. Dusty roads, ubiquitous bus stops, several marketplaces. There are no signboards here to lead you to the land that a 1670s traveller said resembled Babel in the variety of tongues and the differences of garbs and costumes. But for the discerning tourist, there's the extraordinary its just hidden behind a mass of the mundane.
