Tirumala Temple Rolls Out AI And Anti-Drone Technology For Efficient Pilgrim Flow

With growing crowds, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams have introduced technology-driven solutions, including AI facial scans and anti-drone defence, to modernise temple operations

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has introduced advanced technologies, including facial recognition and anti-drone systems, to improve security and streamline the pilgrimage experience at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala. These initiatives aim to manage the high volume of visitors and ensure a more efficient and secure environment for devotees.

AI and Facial Recognition for Streamlined Pilgrimage at Tirupati

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has commenced the use of AI-based facial recognition systems to authenticate pilgrims during the darshan process. Time-slotted "Sarva Darshan" tokens are issued to devotees, capturing their facial features upon entry. These images are then compared with a database of approximately 1 million images from the past 30 days to prevent duplicate bookings and ensure genuine attendance. This system aims to facilitate a smoother and more organised darshan experience for visitors.

Devotees are required to register online, providing personal details and uploading a photograph. Upon arrival, their identity is verified through facial recognition, ensuring that services such as darshan, accommodation, and prasad distribution are allocated fairly and to the rightful individuals. This system also aims to help in curbing the activities of middlemen who exploit the system for financial gain.

Anti-Drone Technology for Enhanced Security

In addition to facial recognition, TTD has deployed anti-drone technology to safeguard the temple premises from unauthorised aerial surveillance and potential security threats.

AI-powered cameras are installed along darshan pathways to monitor pilgrim movement and estimate waiting times. This data aids in assessing the efficiency of services provided and identifying areas for improvement. Additionally, the system assists in detecting and tracking intruders, thereby enhancing security measures within the temple premises.

This measure is part of a broader initiative to enhance the security infrastructure at the temple, ensuring the safety of both the devotees and the sacred site.

Data Privacy and Ethical Considerations

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has emphasised the importance of data privacy in the implementation of these technologies. Stringent measures are reportedly in place to protect personal information, ensuring that the use of AI and facial recognition does not compromise the privacy of the devotees. The temple administration, according to reports, is committed to maintaining ethical standards while adopting technological advancements to improve the pilgrimage experience.
