These 7 Temples In Assam Will Soon Be Connected Via Waterways In The Brahmaputra

The Assam government recently received approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to develop an ambitious waterway project to boost river tourism and religious connectivity. This project not only boosts the connectivity between these iconic religious sites but also provides a new dimension to Assam's tourism. Visitors can enjoy views of the Brahmaputra River while exploring the state’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

The waterways aim to make temple visits more accessible and enjoyable while promoting Assam as a major tourist destination. Here's what you need to know about this initiative:

Waterway Project Overview

With an investment of INR 645.56 crore under the Sagarmala Scheme, the project will create a network of waterways connecting seven prominent temples in Assam. According to reports, the concept is based on a "Hop on & Hop off" service, allowing visitors to explore multiple temples efficiently.

The project involves constructing:

• 12 floating terminals

• Two multimodal terminals at Pandu and Jogighopa

• Two permanent terminals at Bogibeel and Dhubri

Approval for the plan was granted by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, signalling a significant step towards leveraging Assam's waterways for tourism.

7 Temples Connected By The Waterways

Kamakhya Temple: Known as one of India's most ancient Shakti Peethas, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. It draws devotees worldwide for its unique rituals and the Ambubachi Mela, a celebration of the goddess’s yearly menstruation cycle.

Pandunath Temple: Located near Kaziranga National Park, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is steeped in mythology and is associated with the Pandavas from the Mahabharata.

Ashwaklanta Temple: This serene temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna, is believed to house a statue installed by the sage Narada.

Doul Govinda Temple: Famous for its Holi celebrations, this temple in Tezpur is also dedicated to Lord Krishna and is a hub for cultural festivities.

Umananda Temple: Situated on the picturesque Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra River, this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is accessible by boat, offering visitors a spiritual and scenic experience.

Chakreshwar Temple: Nestled in the tranquil village of Hajo, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is noted for its historical importance and peaceful environment.
