Rahul Bhatia Takes Charge As IndiGo’s Interim CEO After Pieter Elbers’ Exit

IndiGo co-founder Rahul Bhatia has taken over as interim CEO following Pieter Elbers’ resignation after months of operational challenges

Nearly two decades after co-founding IndiGo, Rahul Bhatia has returned to leadership. The InterGlobe Aviation co-founder has assumed the role of interim Chief Executive Officer following the resignation of Pieter Elbers, marking a significant shift at India’s largest airline after months of operational turbulence.

Bhatia’s return to day-to-day leadership comes at a critical moment for IndiGo, which has been working to rebuild its reputation after a major operational meltdown in December 2025 disrupted thousands of flights and affected hundreds of thousands of passengers. In an internal message to employees, Bhatia acknowledged the airline's challenges and called for unity as the company works to restore stability and regain customer confidence.

Rahul Bhatia Steps Into Expanded Leadership Role

Announcing his expanded role, Bhatia said he was assuming greater responsibility with a deep sense of duty toward the airline’s customers, shareholders and employees.

“I step into my expanded role of managing the affairs of IndiGo with a deep sense of responsibility—not only to the company's customers and its shareholders, but to every employee who powers this airline,” Bhatia wrote in his internal communication to staff.

Bhatia, who co-founded IndiGo in 2006 and currently serves as Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation, has largely stayed away from the airline’s day-to-day operations in recent years. His decision to take a more active leadership role signals the seriousness with which the company is approaching its recent operational challenges.

In his message, Bhatia acknowledged the difficult period the airline went through and stressed the need for collective effort to rebuild IndiGo’s operational strength and reputation.

He also emphasised the airline’s core mission of providing affordable fares and a seamless travel experience, urging employees to stay focused, accountable, and united.

December Operational Meltdown

Bhatia’s note describes the operational crisis in December as something that “should never have taken place.”

Between December 3 and 5, IndiGo cancelled more than 2,500 flights and delayed nearly 1,900 others, affecting over three lakh passengers across its network. The disruption stemmed largely from challenges encountered during the implementation of new rules aimed at reducing pilot fatigue.

The sudden operational breakdown shook the airline’s long-standing reputation for punctuality and efficiency. Acknowledging the impact of the crisis, Bhatia said both customers and employees had been unfairly affected.

“Our customers didn't deserve it, and nor did all of you, especially the frontline employees who bore most of the brunt for no fault of theirs,” he wrote.

The co-founder also thanked staff members who worked tirelessly to restore operational stability during the crisis.

“I wish to place on record my indebtedness to all my colleagues who carried the company's cross with grace and dignity, and ploughed through sleepless nights to restore IndiGo's operational integrity. You are indeed the living spirit of IndiGo,” he said.

Pieter Elber's Tenure Ends Despite Expansion Success

The leadership change follows the resignation of Pieter Elbers, who had been serving as IndiGo’s CEO since September 2022.

During his tenure, Elbers oversaw the airline's rapid growth. Under his leadership, IndiGo expanded its fleet to more than 440 aircraft and strengthened its position as India’s largest airline by market share.

The company also placed a historic order for 500 Airbus A320-family aircraft, one of the largest aircraft orders in aviation history. Financially, IndiGo also reached new milestones during this period, emerging as a USD 10-billion airline.

However, the December operational meltdown proved to be a turning point. The disruption triggered regulatory scrutiny and dealt a significant blow to the airline’s image.

In January, India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), imposed a record fine of INR 22.20 crore on the airline and issued show-cause notices directly to Elbers. Although he initially resisted calls for his resignation, the crisis's fallout continued to weigh on the company’s leadership.

A Push To Restore Confidence And Stability

As he takes charge, Bhatia has made it clear that restoring customer trust and operational reliability will be top priorities. In his message to employees, he called on the workforce to help the airline regain its reputation and strengthen its relationship with passengers.

“Let us stay focused and accountable, remain fiercely united and committed to the cause, and continue to do what we do best, offer affordable fares and a courteous and hassle-free travel experience to our customers,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the airline would once again earn the distinction of being “the pride of India.”

Bhatia ended his message on a reassuring note, signing off with the phrase “Main Hoon Na."

Investors appeared to respond positively to the leadership shift. On Tuesday, shares of InterGlobe Aviation rose 3.46 per cent to INR 4,382.45 on the BSE, even as the benchmark Sensex ended the day 0.82 per cent higher at 78,205.98.

As IndiGo navigates the aftermath of its recent crisis, Bhatia’s return to hands-on leadership marks a pivotal moment for the airline, one that could shape the next chapter of India’s largest carrier.
