The Philippines is perfect for those looking for a remarkable blend of pristine beaches, lush nature, and rich history. This stunning archipelago in Southeast Asia is especially popular among Indian travellers. If you’re planning a trip, here’s some exciting news: Indian citizens can now apply for an e-visa, thanks to a recent announcement from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Modernising Application Process

The e-visa system was initially proposed in 2019 and has been under development. It marks a significant collaborative effort among key government agencies, including the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). This initiative aims to modernise and streamline the visa application process for foreign travellers.

“We welcome the announcement of the Department of Foreign Affairs on the full automation of the electronic visa system for India. This is something the administration has been working on for some time. We greatly appreciate the efforts to launch this, especially since we’re looking at India as a very robust outbound market for the Philippines,” said Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco in an interview with Philippines News Agency (PNA).

The system was initially tested in 2021, during which limited access was granted to select nationalities and specific visa types as part of a pilot phase. This stage allowed the agencies to gather valuable feedback and data, helping to fine-tune the system before broader implementation. As of 2023, plans to broaden the programme's scope have been confirmed, indicating a positive trajectory towards making the e-visa accessible to more travellers.

Applicants can fill out application forms without visiting embassies or consulates.

The full activation of the e-visa system in India had encountered delays. Despite this setback, the overall vision for the e-visa system remains robust, promising to enhance travel efficiency by simplifying the visa application process for travellers. As of the end of October 2024, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that 7,259 e-visas had been issued.

How It Operates

The new system allows Indian nationals to apply for their Philippines visas online through the official portal. Applicants can fill out application forms without visiting embassies or consulates. Visa fees can be paid securely through direct bank transfer, and approved e-visas will be sent directly to applicants via email, eliminating delays. This means no more standing in long queues at embassies for a Philippines visit visa. The service is accessible to applicants connected to New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai Philippine offices.

At present, only single-entry e-visas are available for travel to the Philippines. This type of visa permits one entry into the country; re-entry is not allowed. The initial e-visa for the Philippines is valid for 30 days. If you wish to extend your stay beyond this duration, you must apply for a renewal.
