An orange alert has been issued for Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, warning of rain and thunderstorms after both the states witnessed fresh snow. The affected areas in J&K include Srinagar, Warwan, and Marwan, while in Himachal Pradesh, tourist hotspots like Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Sirmaur are receiving moderate to heavy snowfall.

As the snowfall spell continues in the Himalayan states, Outlook Traveller has rounded up essential tips to stay safe in snow:

Tips To Stay Safe In Snow

Monitor Weather Updates: Keep track of official weather forecasts and warnings from the IMD (India Meteorological Department). Avoid travelling to high-altitude areas during extreme conditions.

Dress In Layers: Wear thermal inner layers, an insulating middle layer, and a waterproof outer layer. Ensure you have gloves, a hat, and waterproof boots to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

Stay Indoors, If Possible: During severe snowfall and blizzards, it’s safest to stay inside. Avoid unnecessary travel, as snow-covered roads can become slippery and dangerous.

Prepare For Power Outages: Heavy snow can damage power lines. Keep flashlights, extra batteries, and a power bank ready. A backup heating source like a gas heater or fireplace is beneficial.

Stock Essential Supplies: If you live in a high-snowfall area, ensure you have enough food, drinking water, medicines, and emergency supplies in case of roadblocks.

Drive With Caution: If travel is unavoidable, use snow chains on your tyres for better grip. Drive slowly and maintain distance from other vehicles. Keep an emergency kit with blankets, food, and a first-aid kit in your car.

Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: If using heaters or generators, ensure proper ventilation. Avoid running vehicles inside garages with closed doors.

Beware Of Avalanche Risks: Mountainous regions are prone to avalanches after heavy snowfall. Avoid trekking or venturing into risky slopes. Follow local advisories.

Keep Communication Open: Mobile networks may face disruptions. Inform family members about your whereabouts and carry a charged power bank for emergencies.

Take Care Of Health: Snow-related illnesses like hypothermia and frostbite are real threats. Keep warm, stay hydrated, and watch for symptoms like numbness or extreme shivering.
