While New Delhi might face nation-wide criticism for its alarming pollution levels, the city doesn&rsquot disappoint in terms of single-use plastic. The Indira Gandhi International Airport has now become free of single-use plastic.

According to reports, the Confederation of Indian Industry-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CII-ITC CESD) that supports the business community towards achieving sustainability, has certified DIAL for its successful voluntary implementation of single-use plastic-free airport measures within IGI Airport's operations.

The theme for World Environment Day 2018 was &lsquoBeat Plastic Pollution&rsquo and Delhi Airport was the first Indian Airport to make a &lsquosingle-use plastic-free&rsquo commitment in 2019.

On a global scale, several airports across the world are aiming to go single-use plastic-free in order to reduce the waste generated. Delhi Airport has resorted to eco-friendly sustainable alternatives thereby reducing its plastic waste generation.

However, some plastic items that are exempt from the list of banned items include security tamper-evident bags, sealed PET bottles, pre-packaged materials from manufacturers meant for sale and compostable plastic bags.
