Following successful experiments carried out in 15 pairs of AC trains on Rajdhani train routes, Indian Railways is all set to get new air-conditioning features to ensure safer travel in the post COVID-19 era.

The new feature is similar to air-conditioning systems used in operation theatres where the Roof Mounted AC Package Unit (RMPU) system will replace the cool air inside your compartment about 16 to 18 times per hour. This is being done to minimise the spread of infections and ensure safer travel.

Though the experiment has been carried out in a handful of AC trains, the ministry is gearing up to implement it on all AC coach trains throughout the country.

According to railway officials, AC units on trains circulate new air only six to eight times per hour, and 80 percent of that is recirculated air. 

In addition to the new feature, the central air conditioning temperature has also been increased from the previous 23 degrees Celsius to 25 degree Celsius, so that passengers do not have to be provided with linens which could be contaminated.

This will be a welcome move as some studies have concluded that air conditioners may act as a catalyst in droplet transmission.
