The National Conference on Adventure Tourism, hosted by the Ministry of Tourism from December 18th to 19th, 2023, at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, aimed to position India as a global adventure tourism hub by 2047 under the theme "Viksit Bharat@2047: Making India a Global Adventure Tourism Hub."
Geographically, India holds a significant advantage, with 70% of the Himalayas, a 7,000-kilometer coastline, both hot and cold deserts, extensive forest cover, and recognition for its UNESCO Natural Heritage sites. Despite this potential, India's global ranking in adventure tourism remains lower than anticipated.
Recognising this untapped potential, the Ministry of Tourism formulated a National Strategy for adventure tourism. They designated the Indian Institute of Travel and Tourism Management as the Central Nodal Agency for Adventure Tourism to provide technical support. Moreover, a National Board for Adventure Tourism was established to guide sector development.
Strategic pillars were identified for sustainable tourism growth, including state assessments, capacity building, marketing, safety management, rescue infrastructure, destination development, and governance enhancement.
India has set ambitious tourism goals, targeting a USD 3 trillion tourism economy by 2047, with adventure tourism contributing USD 800 billion. This entails welcoming 20 million foreign tourists 80 million domestic adventure travellers, and generating USD 90 billion in foreign exchange.
During the conference, Director Niche Tourism, Ministry of Tourism, Smt. Radha Katyal Narang applauded Gujarat's success in organising ATOAI's 15th Annual Convention & Pre-Vibrant Gujarat Event. The Director highlighted the Ministry's efforts in promoting sustainable adventure tourism.
Key presentations included the National Strategy for Adventure Tourism, emphasising collaboration among stakeholders. International perspectives by Mike Druce and industry insights from Ajeet Bajaj further enriched the discussions.
The Ministry launched the "Adventure Tourism India Website" and announced the "Best Adventure Tourism Destination Competition 2024."
