Bali Has Banned All Tourism Activities On Its Mountains And Volcanoes

A notable surge has been seen in tourist activities in the post-pandemic world, accompanied by a rise in careless tourist activities. Recognizing the importance of environmental conservation, responsible tourism has emerged as an integral approach, emphasizing the responsibility of tourists to safeguard the environment and preserve the integrity of the destinations they visit.

Bali recently took a similar step to align with its responsible tourism and sustainability practices. The island authorities have banned all tourist activities on its mountains and volcanoes with immediate effect. The comprehensive ban has reportedly been imposed across all its 22 mountains. With the ban in place, tourists will miss out on many novel experiences at its captivating highlands and mountain landscapes. 

Here's What Led To The Ban

The ban has been imposed in the wake of disturbing incidents where tourists have reportedly shown disrespect to the sacred nature of Bali's holy mountains. These incidents have included public nudity, death on the mountain slopes, and accidents resulting from reckless behaviour.

One incident that ignited public outrage was a Russian tourist captured inappropriately posing atop the revered Mount Agung in Bali. The widely circulated images on social media depicted the unidentified individual pulling down his trousers for a photo, prompting residents to demand his deportation, as the mountain is regarded as a sacred abode of the gods. 

Ban For Both Domestic & International Travellers

Making the announcement banning all activities on Bali's mountains, Governor Wayan Koster said the ban is applicable to both local and foreign tourists. The imposition of this far-reaching ban is reportedly intended to be permanent, accompanied by a comprehensive set of rules and regulations. 

Exceptions For Domestic Travellers

Although, Governor Koster emphasized that the access to the mountains will be restricted to the residents, specific designated occasions can allow the enty. Exceptions include religious celebrations. In case of natural disasters, people can be allowed to visit the mountains but only, when deemed necessary. Outside of these exceptional circumstances, the ban strictly prohibits any individual from engaging in mountain-related activities or enjoying the splendour of Bali's mountains and volcanoes.
