Greenland, a stunningly beautiful and largely untouched territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, is characterised by its icy landscapes and sparsely populated regions. Its capital, Nuuk, is a charming town with a community of about 18,000 residents. Now, a new international airport will connect Nuuk to the global stage, making it the first gateway for travellers to this extraordinary destination.

The launch of the new international airport on November 28, 2024, signifies the start of a series of airport openings in Greenland that will continue until 2026. These developments are set to provide more frequent and cost-effective travel options, making Greenland an increasingly accessible destination. This transformative change is expected to revolutionise local tourism by potentially doubling the number of air arrivals in the coming year, inviting visitors to experience Greenland's unique culture and breathtaking landscapes.

Nuuk’s new airport marks an exciting beginning, with two more airports set to launch by the end of 2026 in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq. This development will significantly enhance accessibility, allowing travellers to reach most regions of the country in just 1.5 hours. Direct flights to Nuuk will be available via jet plane between Nuuk and Copenhagen, Denmark, for the first time. Although Air Greenland and Icelandair will initially operate the new airports, this opens the door for new airlines and increased flight options to Greenland. The revamped flight schedule is poised to transform travel to and within Greenland, offering more affordable and efficient logistics and making it easier than ever to explore this stunning destination.

In 2026, a second international airport will open in Ilulissat, Greenland’s top tourist destination, 350 miles north of Nuuk. This town is celebrated for the icebergs that float along its coastline. Following this development, a new regional airport in Qaqortoq, the largest town in southern Greenland, will provide greater access and convenience for travellers exploring this extraordinary part of the world.

Moreover, beginning in June 2025, United Airlines Holdings Inc. will introduce an exciting new direct route from Newark, New York, to the captivating city of Nuuk. In addition, SAS AB and Icelandair Group hf are set to offer flights from Copenhagen and Iceland’s largest airport, Keflavik, expanding access to this stunning destination. Until now, international travellers have had to land further north in the charming but remote town of Kangerlussuaq. With these new routes, exploring Greenland has never been easier!
